Read the full storyVictoria's Parliament passed the law creating three new national parks in November 2025, and the designations took effect this month. Together they cover more than 250 square miles of forest in the central-west of the Australian state. They are Mount Buangor, Pyrenees and Wombat-Lerderderg, the largest of the three. The parks are the first new national parks of substantial size in Victoria for 15 years. They protect rare and threatened plants, animals and fungi, including greater gliders, powerful owls and platypuses. Parks Victoria will share management of the forests, and management plans are due within 12 months. The announcement was reported by Good News Network, which cites the National Tribune as its source for the details.
Why we picked this: Protected forest for gliders, owls and platypuses. Governments do not often get the slow, useful things right, so this one is worth noting.
